Square footage, and why the unit trips people up
Area is length times width, but the unit has to be consistent before you multiply, not after. Measure a room as 144 inches by 168 inches, multiply, and you get 24,192 — square inches, not square feet. Dividing that by 12 gives a wrong answer; you need to divide by 144, because a square foot contains 144 square inches. Converting each measurement first avoids the trap entirely, which is what this calculator does internally.
The second common mistake is measuring the bounding box of an irregular room. A room shaped like an L is two rectangles, and the outer rectangle includes floor that does not exist. Splitting the space is always more accurate than adjusting a single number by feel.
Worked example 1: a straightforward bedroom
The room measures 12 ft by 14 ft: 168 sq ft, or 15.6 square metres. Adding the standard 10 percent waste allowance gives 185 sq ft to order. Flooring is sold by the carton, so check coverage per box — at 22 sq ft per carton you need nine boxes, which is 198 sq ft, and the extra becomes your repair stock.
Worked example 2: an L-shaped living area
The main run is 20 ft by 13 ft (260 sq ft) and the dining nook off it is 9 ft by 8 ft (72 sq ft). Total 332 sq ft. If you had measured the bounding rectangle at 29 ft by 13 ft you would have got 377 sq ft — a 45 sq ft error, roughly two extra cartons of flooring you did not need.
Worked example 3: a circular patio
A round patio 10 ft across has a radius of 5 ft, so the area is pi x 5 x 5 = 78.5 sq ft. Circles waste more material than rectangles because every edge cut is curved: a 20 percent allowance is more realistic than 10 for pavers or turf on a circular area.

Measuring practices worth keeping
Measure at floor level rather than at waist height, since walls are rarely plumb and skirting boards change the usable dimension. Take each measurement at both ends of the room; if they differ by more than an inch, use the larger one and expect to scribe the final row. Note the numbers on a sketch as you go rather than trusting memory — the most expensive mistakes come from transposed digits, not from the arithmetic.
For flooring, remember that coverage per carton is nominal and includes no waste; for paint, the stated spread rate assumes a smooth primed surface and drops sharply on textured or unprimed walls. Buy the extra now while the batch and dye lot match. A carton left over is far cheaper than a mismatched repair two years later.

How do I calculate square footage of a room?
Multiply length by width in feet. A room 12 ft by 14 ft is 168 square feet. If you measured in inches, divide each measurement by 12 first, or switch the unit selector — converting after multiplying is the most common source of a wrong answer.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Ten percent is the usual allowance for straight-lay flooring, 15 percent for diagonal or herringbone patterns, and more for rooms with many cuts. The waste field defaults to 10 percent — raise it if the room is irregular or the planks are long.
How do I handle an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, measure each, and add them. The L-shape option does exactly that: enter the long leg first, then the second rectangle, and it returns the combined area. Never measure the outer bounding box — that counts the missing corner as floor.
