How the drywall estimate is built
Every drywall take-off is the same short chain of arithmetic. First find the gross wall area: 2 × (length + width) × wall height. Second, deduct the openings — this calculator uses 21 square feet for a standard door (roughly 3 ft × 7 ft) and 15 square feet for an average window (about 3 ft × 5 ft). Third, add the ceiling if you are boarding it, which is simply length × width. Fourth, divide the total by the area of one sheet and add waste, because no room is cut without off-cuts.
The sheet areas are fixed: a 4 × 8 sheet is 32 square feet, a 4 × 10 is 40 and a 4 × 12 is 48. The waste allowance here is 10%, which is the number most estimators use for a plain rectangular room. Everything else on the results panel is a consumable driven by the same area figure: joint compound at one gallon of ready-mixed mud per 100 square feet, joint tape at 0.4 feet of tape per square foot sold in 500 ft rolls, and screws at 1 lb of 1-5/8 in coarse-thread per 300 square feet.
Worked example: a 16 × 12 ft bedroom, ceiling included
Take a US bedroom 16 feet by 12 feet with 8-foot walls, one door and two windows, and assume you are boarding the ceiling as well.
The perimeter is 2 × (16 + 12) = 56 feet. Multiplied by the 8-foot height that is 448 square feet of gross wall. Deduct one door at 21 and two windows at 15 each — 51 square feet — and the net wall is 397 square feet. The ceiling adds 16 × 12 = 192, so the total surface to board is 589 square feet.
In 4 × 8 sheets that is 589 ÷ 32 = 18.4 sheets before waste, and 20.3 with the 10% allowance, so you buy 21 sheets. Switch to 4 × 12 sheets and the same room needs 589 ÷ 48 = 12.3, or 14 sheets with waste. The consumables do not change with sheet size: about 6 gallons of joint compound (roughly one and a third of the standard 4.5-gallon bucket), 236 feet of paper tape which is a single 500 ft roll, and 2 lb of screws. That is the whole shopping list for a bedroom, and it is worth noticing that the fasteners and mud cost a fraction of the board.
Planning a layout that minimises joints
Sheet count is not the only thing longer boards change. Drywall has tapered long edges, which are designed to be filled and taped so the seam disappears under a shallow bed of compound. The short ends are cut square, and those butt joints have no recess to hide the tape in, so they always end up as a slight hump that has to be feathered out 18 to 24 inches on each side. Every butt joint you avoid is one less place where a shadow will show up in raking light from a window.
That is why the practical rule is to hang the longest sheet you can physically handle, run it horizontally, and stagger the butt joints between rows so they never stack into a continuous vertical line. On a 16-foot wall, two 4 × 12 sheets and a pair of 4-foot fillers gives one butt joint per row; four 4 × 8 sheets gives two per row and puts them at the same place unless you deliberately offset. If your walls are 12 feet or shorter and you can get the boards into the room, 4 × 12 sheets are almost always the better buy despite the 82 lb handling weight.
Finish levels, and why the mud number matters
The compound estimate here assumes a normal level 4 finish: tape coat, fill coat, skim coat and sand. If you are aiming for a level 5 finish — a thin skim across the entire surface, which is what you want under glossy paint or in a hallway raked by downlights — plan on roughly 50% more compound and a full extra day for drying and sanding. Conversely, a garage or utility space finished to level 2 (tape plus one wipe-down coat) uses noticeably less. Buy mud in the 4.5-gallon buckets rather than boxes if the job is more than one room; the price per gallon is lower and unopened buckets keep for months.
DIY or hire it out
Hanging is heavy but forgiving work; finishing is light but unforgiving. A homeowner who has never taped a seam can absolutely board a bedroom, and the honest advice is to rent a panel lift for the ceiling — it costs about the price of a sheet per day and removes the one part of the job that genuinely needs two strong people. Where amateurs lose time is the finishing: three coats with proper drying between them, sanded with a light held flat against the wall to reveal every ridge. If the room will be painted a dark, flat colour, small imperfections vanish. If it will be gloss white with a window at one end, budget for a professional taper.
What this calculator does not cover
It models the room as a plain rectangular box, so vaulted or sloped ceilings, bay windows, soffits, stairwells and closet interiors need to be measured and added separately. It does not add framing, corner bead, adhesive, primer or the extra sheets a double-layer fire-rated assembly requires, and it does not know whether your job calls for moisture-resistant board in a bathroom or Type X in a garage. Openings are averages: a set of patio doors or a picture window is far larger than the 21 and 15 square feet assumed, so deduct those by hand. Finally, if a sheet arrives with a crushed corner you will be a sheet short, which is why every experienced hanger orders one spare and nobody regrets it.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy 4x8 or 4x12 drywall sheets?
Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints, and butt joints are the hardest seams to hide because they have no tapered edge to bury the tape in. A 12 ft sheet spans most bedroom walls in one piece, which is why hangers default to it. The trade-off is handling: a 4x12 half-inch sheet weighs around 82 lb, so 4x8 is the sane choice for one person, tight hallways or a stairwell.
Is it better to hang drywall horizontally or vertically?
On residential walls up to 9 ft, horizontal is standard. It puts the tapered seam at chest height where it is easy to finish, cuts the total taped length by roughly a quarter, and ties the studs together for a flatter wall. Hang vertically when the wall is very tall, when a fire rating specifies it, or when studs are badly out of line. Ceilings always run perpendicular to the joists.
What thickness of drywall goes on a ceiling?
Use 5/8 in board whenever the ceiling framing is 24 in on centre, and 1/2 in sag-resistant ceiling board when joists are 16 in on centre. Standard 1/2 in wallboard sags between widely spaced joists, especially once it is painted or has blown insulation sitting on top. A garage ceiling under living space usually needs 5/8 in Type X for the fire rating.
How much waste should I allow?
This calculator already adds 10%, which covers off-cuts in a plain rectangular room. Add roughly one extra sheet per ten when the space has many corners, closets, a stairwell or a run of windows, because every opening leaves a piece too small to reuse. Buy at least one spare sheet either way — a corner crushed on delivery day is the usual reason for a second trip.
