Where the "one dog year equals seven" idea came from

The seven-to-one rule appears to have started as marketing arithmetic: humans lived to about 70, dogs to about 10, so someone divided. It is memorable and wrong in both directions. A one-year-old dog is sexually mature, fully grown in most breeds, and behaviourally something like a teenager — not a seven-year-old child. Meanwhile a 13-year-old small dog is old but not the 91-year-old the rule implies.

Modern veterinary charts split ageing into phases. The first year covers roughly 15 human years of development, the second adds about nine more, and every year after that adds a smaller amount that depends on adult body size. This calculator follows that shape, then shows a second estimate from the epigenetic clock as a cross-check.

Worked example 1: a 7-year-old Labrador

A Labrador is a large breed at roughly 30 kg. Years one and two contribute 24 human years. The remaining five years add 5.5 each: 5 x 5.5 = 27.5. Total is about 52 human years, and the dog is entering the mature-to-senior transition — the age at which most vets start recommending twice-yearly checks and bloodwork.

Worked example 2: the same age, a small dog

A 7-year-old Jack Russell at 7 kg also banks 24 years from the first two, but the remaining five add only 4 each: 20. Total is around 44 human years — solidly middle-aged with several good years ahead. Two dogs, identical birthdays, eight human years apart. That gap is why the size selector matters more than any other input.

Worked example 3: a Great Dane at 5

Giant breeds compress everything. Five years for a Dane gives 24 + (3 x 6.5) = 43.5 human years, but the life-stage label already reads senior, because giant breeds typically enter their final third by age six. The human-year number and the life stage answer different questions: one is a rough comparison, the other is what actually drives care decisions.

The epigenetic clock, briefly

In 2020 researchers compared DNA methylation patterns in Labrador retrievers and humans and derived a much cleaner mapping: human age = 16 x ln(dog age) + 31. It reproduces the rapid early ageing curve without needing separate phases, and it lines up with known milestones — puberty, average lifespan — better than the linear folk rule. Its weakness is the puppy end, where the logarithm overshoots, which is why this tool leaves it blank below one year.

Take both numbers as approximations. A dog's real biological age depends on breed predisposition, weight, dental health, exercise and luck. What the numbers are good for is context: knowing that a seven-year-old giant breed is already a senior citizen changes how you think about anaesthesia, joint supplements and how many good years are left to plan around.

If you want one practical takeaway, it is the screening schedule. Small dogs benefit from annual senior bloodwork from about nine; large dogs from about seven; giants from five or six. Catching kidney or thyroid changes early is worth far more than any conversion number.
