How does the mid-parental height method work?

The mid-parental (Tanner) method is the quick formula pediatricians use to estimate a child's adult height from the parents' heights. You average the father's and mother's height, then adjust for sex: for a boy this child height predictor adds 13 cm (about 5 inches) to the parents' average, and for a girl it subtracts 13 cm. That shift reflects the roughly 13 cm difference between average adult men and women. The result is the mid-parental height — a single best guess for how tall your child will grow as an adult.

How accurate is this child height prediction?

The mid-parental method gives a point estimate with a likely range of about ±8.5 cm (±3.3 in), roughly two standard deviations, and around 80% of children reach an adult height inside that band. So treat the number as the centre of a range, not an exact figure. Accuracy is best when both parents are near average height and drops when either parent is very short or very tall, which is why this tool flags a warning when a parent's height is far from average.

Can nutrition, sleep or exercise make my child taller than predicted?

Genetics set roughly 60–80% of a person's final height, so the parents' heights are by far the strongest predictor. The remaining share is shaped by environment: balanced nutrition, enough deep sleep (growth hormone is released during sleep), regular physical activity and good overall health during the growing years. These factors can help a child reach the upper part of their genetic range, but they rarely push adult height beyond it. Chronic illness or poor nutrition, on the other hand, can pull height toward the lower end.

At what age is a height prediction reliable?

The mid-parental method is age-independent — it estimates adult height from the parents alone, so it works the same whether your child is a toddler or a teenager. Methods that read the child directly, such as bone-age X-rays or plotting current height on a growth percentile chart, become more precise as the child approaches puberty, because more of their growth has already happened. For a family-heights estimate, though, this calculator gives you a reasonable ballpark at any age.

Is my family's height data sent to a server?

No. This child height predictor runs entirely in your browser — the father's height, mother's height and the child's sex never leave your device. Your last entry is saved only in your browser's localStorage so the form is pre-filled on your next visit, and you can clear it anytime from your browser settings. Nothing is uploaded, tracked or shared.
