How the 12 signs and their dates work
Each sign owns a roughly month-long slice of the calendar, based on where the Sun appears to be along the ecliptic (its path through the sky) at the time of your birth. The order and standard ranges are:

Elements and modalities, briefly
Every sign is also grouped by two extra labels that astrology tradition uses to describe its general flavor. The four elements — Fire, Earth, Air, and Water — loosely group signs by temperament (Fire: energetic; Earth: grounded; Air: idea-driven; Water: emotional). The three modalities — Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable — describe a sign's role in each season: Cardinal signs start a season, Fixed signs hold steady through the middle of it, and Mutable signs help it transition into the next. Each of the 12 signs has a unique element-modality combination, which is why the reference table above lists both.
Worked example. Someone born on July 30 falls between July 23 and August 22, so their sign is Leo — a Fire sign with the Fixed modality. Typing "1996-07-30" (or any July 30 birthday) into the calculator above returns Leo ♌, Fire, Fixed, along with a short trait blurb.
Cusp dates: when your birthday is right on the boundary
If you were born within a day of a sign boundary — say March 20 or April 20 — you're on what's commonly called a "cusp." The date ranges shown here are the standard, widely used approximation, but the Sun's precise entry into each sign can drift by roughly a day depending on the year and your time zone, because a calendar year isn't an exact whole number of days. When your entered date lands right on one of these edges, the calculator flags the neighboring sign too, so you can see both possibilities.
