How a stair calculation actually works

Every staircase starts from one measurement: the total rise, taken from the finished floor at the bottom to the finished floor at the top. Not the subfloor — if you are laying 3/4 in hardwood upstairs and tile downstairs, those thicknesses belong in the number. Get the total rise wrong and every riser in the flight is wrong with it.

From there the arithmetic is short. Divide the total rise by a target riser height and round to the nearest whole number: that is your riser count. Divide the total rise back by that count and you get the exact riser height, identical for every step. Treads are always one fewer than risers, because the top floor itself acts as the last tread. Multiply the tread count by your tread depth for the total run, then use Pythagoras on rise and run for the stringer length.

Worked example: a 108 in total rise

A typical American two-storey has about 108 in from finished floor to finished floor — 8 ft of ceiling plus joists and flooring. Aim for a comfortable 7 in riser: 108 / 7 = 15.43, which rounds to 15 risers. Divide back: 108 / 15 = 7.2 in per riser, exactly, fifteen times.

That gives 14 treads. At a common 10.5 in tread depth the total run is 14 x 10.5 = 147 in, or 12 ft 3 in of floor space you need to have available. The stringer runs the hypotenuse: the square root of 108² + 147² is about 182.4 in, so a 16 ft board covers it with room for the cuts. Check the code numbers: 7.2 in riser is under the 7.75 in IRC maximum, the 10.5 in tread clears the 10 in minimum, and 2R + T = 14.4 + 10.5 = 24.9 in, inside the 24 to 25 in comfort window. This flight passes on all three counts.

What happens if you force 16 risers

Switching the target to a shorter riser gives 108 / 6.75 = 16 risers at 6.75 in each, with 15 treads and a 157.5 in run. Every step is gentler, but you have just added 10.5 in of floor length and 2R + T drops to 24 in — right at the edge of comfortable. Shallower risers are not automatically better; they push the stair longer and can make people clip the nosing on the way down. The trade-off between run length and riser height is the whole design decision.

Comfort, and why 2R + T matters more than either number alone

A riser can be legal and a tread can be legal and the stair can still feel wrong. The classic formula — twice the riser plus the tread landing between 24 and 25 in — captures the relationship between the two. It comes from the observation that a human stride shortens roughly 2 in for every 1 in of climb. Stairs that fall below 24 in feel steep and choppy; above 25 in they feel stretched, and people find themselves half-stepping. If your calculated result sits outside the range, adjust the tread depth first, since it is usually easier to change than the riser count.

Stringer layout tips

Mark stringers with a framing square and a pair of stair gauges clamped at your rise and run figures. Step the square down the board, tracing each triangle, and cut with a circular saw stopping short of the inside corner, then finish with a handsaw so you do not overcut and weaken the stringer.

The one cut that trips everyone up is the bottom. If your treads are 1 in thick, the bottom riser will finish 1 in taller than the rest unless you drop the stringer by exactly one tread thickness. Cutting that off the bottom plumb cut is the standard fix, and it is what keeps all fifteen risers within the 3/8 in variance an inspector will measure. Check the top attachment too: whether the stringer hangs off the header or sits on it changes the top riser by the depth of the framing.

Finally, plan the space around the stair, not just the stair. You need at least 6 ft 8 in of headroom under the opening above, at least 36 in of stair width for most residential flights, and landings at least as deep as the stair is wide wherever a door swings or the flight turns.

Code disclaimer

The limits used here are the 2021 International Residential Code values for private dwellings: 7.75 in maximum riser, 10 in minimum tread, 6 ft 8 in minimum headroom and 3/8 in maximum variation between risers. Commercial stairs under the IBC are tighter, and UK Building Regulations Part K uses its own private-stair envelope with a maximum pitch of 42 degrees. Local amendments override all of it. Treat these results as a fast design check and a materials estimate — then confirm the numbers with your building department, and pull a permit, before anything gets cut.

A 7.2 in riser with a 10.5 in tread gives 24.9 in, which is comfortable; a 7.75 in riser with a 9 in tread gives 24.5 in but still fails the tread minimum.

Do all the risers have to be exactly equal?

Yes, and this is the rule inspectors check most. The IRC allows no more than 3/8 in (9.5 mm) variation between the tallest and shortest riser in a flight. People climb stairs on autopilot, so a single odd riser is a genuine trip hazard. Remember to deduct one tread thickness from the bottom riser cut so the finished heights come out identical.

How much headroom does a staircase need?

The IRC requires at least 6 ft 8 in (2032 mm) measured vertically from the sloped line joining the tread nosings to the ceiling or stairwell opening above. Check it at the top of the flight where the opening ends, because that is where headroom runs out first. If it is tight, lengthening the stairwell opening is usually easier than changing the riser count.
