How this moon phase calculator works

The Moon takes about 29.53 days to cycle from one new moon to the next — astronomers call this a synodic month. This calculator starts from a well-known reference new moon (January 6, 2000, 18:14 UTC) and measures how many days have elapsed since that reference point, wrapped to the current cycle. That elapsed time, the Moon's "age," is all it takes to estimate the phase, illumination, and the next full and new moon dates — no external astronomy service or API call required, so it works fully offline once the page has loaded.

Example — a full moon. Entering July 30, 2026 gives a moon age of about 15.7 days, landing in the Full Moon slice at roughly 99% illumination. The next new moon lands around August 13, 2026, and the next full moon after that around August 28, 2026.

Example — a new moon. Entering July 14, 2026 gives a moon age near the very end of the cycle (about 29.2 days), which the calculator reports as New Moon at roughly 0% illumination — the reference algorithm places the exact new moon later that same day.

Moon phases and lunar calendars around the world

Many traditional calendars are anchored to the Moon rather than the Sun alone. Korea's 음력 (eumnyeok) and Japan's 旧暦 (kyūreki), like the Chinese lunar calendar, are lunisolar systems: each month starts on or near a new moon, and the 15th of the lunar month lands close to a full moon. That's why harvest-moon festivals — Chuseok in Korea, Tsukimi (Otsukimi) in Japan, the Mid-Autumn Festival in China — always fall on or near a full moon, and why Lunar New Year always falls on a new moon. The Islamic Hijri calendar is fully lunar and traditionally starts each month at the sighting of a new crescent. Accuracy and limitations

This tool uses the average synodic month, but the Moon's real orbit is elliptical, so any individual cycle can run several hours shorter or longer than the 29.53-day average — which is why results are accurate to roughly ±1 day, not to the minute. That's honest and good enough for personal planning, content calendars, or curiosity about tonight's sky, but it is not a substitute for a full astronomical ephemeris where you need celestial navigation, precise tide prediction, or a religious observance that requires an official sighting or authoritative announcement.
