Placeholder text with a 2,000-year-old source
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin used to fill a layout before the real words exist. Designers reach for it because human eyes are drawn to meaning: drop real sentences into a draft and everyone starts editing the copy instead of judging the typography. Nonsense text that still looks like natural language lets a reviewer assess spacing, line length, and rhythm without being distracted by what it says. Typesetters have called this "greeking" for centuries.
The passage is not truly random. It descends from a real work — Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC — with words clipped and shuffled so it reads as Latin-like but means nothing. The familiar opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet," is a fragment of a longer sentence about the pursuit of pleasure, cut mid-word at "dolorem."
Choosing what to generate
The generator produces text three ways, and the right one depends on the slot you are filling.
| Mode | Produces | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Paragraphs | Full multi-sentence blocks | Article bodies, blog mockups |
| Sentences | A set number of sentences | Card descriptions, captions |
| Words | An exact word count | Headlines, labels, buttons |
Worked example 1 — sizing a paragraph block
Ask for 3 paragraphs and you get roughly 3 blocks of 4–6 sentences each. A typical Lorem Ipsum sentence runs about 10–14 words, so 3 paragraphs land near 150–250 words — enough to fill an article preview and see how two or three stacked paragraphs breathe on the page.
Worked example 2 — a headline of exact length
Testing whether a title wraps? Switch to Words mode and request 6 words: something like "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur." Now you can check that a six-word headline fits your column at the chosen font size without pulling in a whole paragraph.
Worked example 3 — ready-to-paste HTML
Enable "Wrap paragraphs in HTML <p> tags" and each block comes out as <p>Lorem ipsum…</p>, so you can paste the output straight into a template and see real paragraph spacing from your stylesheet instead of one undivided lump of text.
Practical tips
- Keep the classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" opening when you want text everyone instantly recognises as placeholder; turn it off for a more varied sample.
- Latin words average slightly shorter than English ones, so a block of Lorem Ipsum can look a touch denser than the English copy that will replace it — leave a little headroom.
- The output stats (paragraphs, sentences, words, characters) let you match placeholder length to a real content budget, such as a 160-character meta description.
When not to use it
Placeholder text is for layout, never for shipping. Leaving Lorem Ipsum in a published page hurts search relevance and occasionally escapes into production in embarrassing ways. It also cannot reveal problems that only real content exposes — a genuine headline may be far longer, and real data may include numbers, links, or names that stress the design differently. Use it to design the container, then replace every word before launch.

Frequently asked questions
What is Lorem Ipsum, and why do designers use it as placeholder text?
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled, semi-random Latin text derived from Cicero's 1st-century BC essay "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum". Designers and developers have used variations of it since the 1500s because it has a natural-looking distribution of letters and word lengths, unlike "Content here, content here" placeholders, so a reader's eye treats it like normal text and doesn't get distracted by a familiar language. Because the words are essentially meaningless, it also doesn't bias a client's opinion of the layout with real marketing copy. This generator produces fresh, grammatically loose Latin-style passages built from that same classic word bank.
Is the text truly random, or does it repeat the same passage every time?
Each click reshuffles a seeded pseudo-random sequence over the classic Lorem Ipsum vocabulary, so consecutive generations read differently even with identical settings — no two passages are the same. Turning on "Start with the classic opening" keeps the familiar first sentence, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit," fixed at the top while everything after it is freshly generated. Turn that option off for a fully randomized passage from the first word.
How do I get Lorem Ipsum wrapped in HTML <p> tags for a website mockup?
Check "Wrap paragraphs in HTML <p> tags" before generating: each paragraph is then wrapped in its own <p>…</p> tag so you can paste the result straight into an HTML template, CMS, or component library without adding markup by hand. In sentence or word mode the whole block is wrapped in a single <p> tag. Leave the option unchecked to get plain text with blank lines between paragraphs instead, ready for a plain-text field or a word processor.
What's the difference between generating by paragraphs, sentences, or words?
Paragraphs mode builds full multi-sentence paragraphs (roughly 3–6 sentences each) and is the best fit for filling in body copy or article mockups. Sentences mode produces a single run of complete sentences, handy for captions, alt text, or a short blurb. Words mode outputs a plain stream of individual words with no paragraph breaks, useful for testing how a UI truncates or wraps a fixed word count. Each mode has its own allowed range shown next to the count field, and out-of-range values are automatically clamped.
Is my generated text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Every passage is generated entirely inside your browser using a local word bank — nothing is uploaded, and no request is sent to any server. Your last-used settings (mode, count, and the two toggles) are saved only in your browser's local storage so the tool remembers your preference next time, and you can clear that at any time by clearing your browser data.
