Where the mid-parental formula comes from

Predicting adult height from the parents is not a modern invention. Francis Galton plotted parent and child heights in the 1880s and found the pattern this calculator relies on: taller-than-average parents tend to have taller-than-average children, and shorter parents the reverse, with a fairly tight statistical link between the two generations. Pediatric researchers James Tanner and Reginald Whitehouse later formalized that link into the averaging formula used today, as part of the 1970s UK growth studies that still underpin pediatric growth monitoring. Clinicians call the output the child's "target height" — a working estimate a pediatrician compares a child's own growth curve against, not a guarantee.

Getting the inputs right

  1. Use each parent's own adult standing height, measured barefoot against a flat wall, not a rounded guess — a 2–3 cm error in either parent shifts the estimate by 1–1.5 cm.
  2. Enter biological parent heights specifically; the formula was built from biological-parent/biological-child pairs, so step-parent or donor heights won't track genetic potential the same way.
  3. Select the child's sex, not either parent's — the sex toggle drives which direction the ±13 cm adjustment goes.
  4. The child's current age or height is deliberately not asked for. This formula estimates final adult height from the parents alone, so it gives the same answer at age 2 or 15; tracking a child's own percentile curve over time is a different method entirely (see the table below).

The formula, step by step

Boy: predicted height = (father's height + mother's height + 13 cm) ÷ 2
Girl: predicted height = (father's height + mother's height − 13 cm) ÷ 2

Both children start from the same base — the average of the two parents' heights — and then the formula shifts that midpoint by half of the roughly 13 cm gap between average adult male and female height, in the direction that matches the child's own sex. That single shift is the entire mechanism behind the sex-adjusted mid-parental method; everything else this tool does is unit conversion and formatting.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a boy, metric inputs
Father 180 cm, mother 165 cm.
(180 + 165 + 13) ÷ 2 = 358 ÷ 2 = 179 cm (about 5 ft 10 in).
Likely range: 170.5–187.5 cm (about 5 ft 7 in – 6 ft 2 in).
Example 2 — a girl, metric inputs
Father 170 cm, mother 155 cm.
(170 + 155 − 13) ÷ 2 = 312 ÷ 2 = 156 cm (about 5 ft 1 in).
Likely range: 147.5–164.5 cm (about 4 ft 10 in – 5 ft 5 in).
Example 3 — a boy, imperial inputs
Father 5 ft 11 in (180.3 cm), mother 5 ft 4 in (162.6 cm).

Why very tall or very short parents get a wider miss

Galton's data revealed a second pattern, which he called "regression toward mediocrity" — now known as regression to the mean. Children of unusually tall parents are taller than average but usually not as extreme as their parents; children of unusually short parents trend shorter than average but land closer to the middle than their parents did. Straight averaging captures the direction of this correctly but not the pull back toward the population mean, so the miss grows specifically when a parent's height sits far from average — exactly the case this tool flags with an on-screen warning.

What this predictor cannot tell you

The 13 cm sex adjustment was derived mainly from mid-20th-century UK and other Western growth studies, so the constant can run slightly off for populations with a different average height gap between men and women. The method also cannot detect medical conditions that override typical growth — growth hormone deficiency, precocious or delayed puberty, chromosomal conditions such as Turner syndrome, or skeletal dysplasias can all push a child's actual adult height well outside a mid-parental estimate. None of that is visible from two parent heights alone; it needs an in-person exam and sometimes bone-age imaging from a pediatrician. This calculator is a private, browser-only estimate for general interest — it is not a medical prediction, a diagnosis, or a substitute for pediatric care.

Can nutrition, sleep or exercise make my child taller than predicted?

Genetics set roughly 60–80% of a person's final height, so the parents' heights are by far the strongest predictor. The remaining share is shaped by environment: balanced nutrition, enough deep sleep (growth hormone is released during sleep), regular physical activity and good overall health during the growing years. These factors can help a child reach the upper part of their genetic range, but they rarely push adult height beyond it. Chronic illness or poor nutrition, on the other hand, can pull height toward the lower end.

At what age is a height prediction reliable?

The mid-parental method is age-independent — it estimates adult height from the parents alone, so it works the same whether your child is a toddler or a teenager. Methods that read the child directly, such as bone-age X-rays or plotting current height on a growth percentile chart, become more precise as the child approaches puberty, because more of their growth has already happened.
