How much asphalt do I need? A 40 x 12 ft driveway, worked end to end
Asphalt is sold by weight, but you measure the job by volume, and that mismatch is where most DIY estimates go wrong. The chain is always the same: area, then volume, then weight, then money. Take a typical single-car driveway of 40 ft by 12 ft finished at 3 in compacted, which is the standard residential specification in both the US and the UK.
Step 1 — volume
Area is 40 x 12 = 480 sq ft. Thickness has to be converted from inches to feet, so 3 in becomes 3 / 12 = 0.25 ft. Volume is 480 x 0.25 = 120 cubic feet, which is 120 / 27 = 4.44 cubic yards. Everything on the calculator above is this one line with unit handling attached.
Step 2 — tonnage
Compacted hot mix asphalt weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot. Multiply: 120 x 145 = 17,400 lb, and 17,400 / 2,000 = 8.7 US tons. A plant will round that to a 9-ton order because trucks are loaded in whole tons and a partial load still costs a delivery. Order 5 to 10 per cent extra anyway — edges, the wedge where the driveway meets the road, and hand-raked areas around a garage apron always eat more than the flat calculation suggests.
Step 3 — cost
At a plant price of 00 per ton, 8.7 tons is $870 in material. Delivered and laid by a contractor, the same driveway typically runs $3 to $7 per square foot in the US, or roughly £45 to £75 per square metre for tarmac in the UK, because labour, plant hire, base stone and the roller dominate the bill. Material is usually a third or less of an installed price — use the tonnage figure to sanity-check a quote, not to replace it.
The same driveway at other thicknesses
Doubling the thickness doubles the tonnage exactly. At 2 in the driveway needs 80 cubic feet and 5.8 tons; at 3 in, 8.7 tons; at 4 in, 11.6 tons. In metric that 12.2 m by 3.66 m drive at 7.5 cm works out at 3.35 m3 and about 7.8 tonnes at 2,322 kg/m3. The coverage line under the results is the fastest field check there is: at 145 lb/ft3 one ton covers roughly 83 sq ft at 2 in, 55 sq ft at 3 in and 41 sq ft at 4 in.
Density and compaction — what "compacted thickness" really means
The 145 lb/ft3 figure is the density of asphalt after it has been rolled. Loose out of the truck, the same mix is far lighter and deeper: a mat placed at roughly 3.75 in loose finishes at about 3 in once compacted, a loss of 20 to 25 per cent. Always specify and calculate compacted thickness, which is what this tool uses, or you will under-order by a fifth.
Density varies with the mix. Dense-graded surface course sits near 145 to 150 lb/ft3. Open-graded friction course and lightweight or recycled-heavy mixes come in 5 to 10 per cent lower, while some binder courses run slightly higher. If the plant gives you a number, put it in the density field; the tonnage moves proportionally.
The base is where driveways actually fail
Asphalt is only the wearing course. It flexes and spreads load, but it cannot bridge a soft spot. Underneath you want 6 to 8 in of compacted crushed aggregate — MOT Type 1 in the UK, dense-graded aggregate base in the US — on a subgrade that has been proof-rolled and drains. In frost-heave regions, or over soft clay, that goes to 8 to 12 in, sometimes with a geotextile separator to stop the stone from pumping down into the mud.
Nearly every ruined driveway you see is a base failure, not an asphalt failure: standing water at the edges, alligator cracking in the wheel tracks, a dip where the delivery lorry parks. Adding another inch of asphalt over a failing base is the most expensive way to buy two more years. Price the stone separately, and if the budget is tight, take it out of the asphalt thickness rather than the base depth.
After the paving: sealing and the first year
New asphalt needs to cure before it is sealed. Give it 6 to 12 months so the volatile oils oxidise off; sealcoating a fresh mat traps them and leaves a surface that scuffs and prints under tyres in hot weather. After that, sealcoat every 3 to 5 years, and crack-fill as soon as cracks open past hairline width — water in a crack, then freezing, is what turns a crack into a pothole. Avoid turning the steering wheel of a parked car on a hot new drive, and keep jack stands and trailer jacks on a spreader plate for the first summer.
Limits of this estimate
The calculator assumes a rectangular area of uniform thickness at a single density. For irregular shapes, split the job into rectangles and add the tonnages. For a crown or a taper, use the average thickness. It does not include the tack coat between layers, the base stone, milling and haul-away of the old surface, or a wedge course to fix bad grades — those are separate line items on any real quote. Confirm the mix, density and minimum load with your supplier before ordering.

What goes under the asphalt?
Asphalt is only the wearing course. Under it you need 6 to 8 in of compacted crushed aggregate base on stable subgrade, and 8 to 12 in where frost heave or soft clay is a problem. This calculator prices the asphalt alone — the base stone is a separate order and usually the larger volume.
Overlay or full-depth replacement?
A 2 in overlay works when the existing surface is structurally sound: hairline cracks, no potholes, drainage still working. Alligator cracking means the base below has failed, and paving over it simply telegraphs the same failure through the new mat within a year or two. In that case remove and rebuild full depth.
How thick should a residential driveway be?
Two to three inches compacted is the norm for cars, laid over 6 to 8 in of compacted base. Go to 4 in where trucks, RVs or skips will park. The thickness in this calculator is always compacted thickness — loose hot mix loses roughly 20 to 25 per cent of its depth once it is rolled.
