Why body fat percentage tells you more than the scale
A bathroom scale only reports total mass — it can't tell you whether a change came from fat, muscle, or water. Two people can share the same height, weight, and even the same BMI, yet carry very different amounts of fat. The U.S. Navy circumference method used here estimates that split from a few tape measurements, so the result reflects how much of your weight is fat versus lean tissue (muscle, bone, organs, water), not one blended number.
It's most useful while actively reshaping your body: cutting calories while lifting to keep muscle, "bulking" and wanting to know how much of the gain was fat, or checking whether a normal-looking weight is hiding a higher fat percentage than expected (see example 3 below).
How to take the measurements
- Choose Male or Female first — the equation and inputs differ; only women enter a hip girth.
- Enter height and weight accurately; both feed directly into the formula, not just for reference.
- Wrap the tape around the neck just below the larynx, sloping slightly forward-down, snug but not compressing the skin.
- Measure the waist at the navel (men) or the narrowest point of the torso (women).
- Women also measure the hips at their widest point around the buttocks.
- Press Calculate. A result far from your last reading usually means a twisted or slack tape — re-measure it.
The formula behind the number
The calculator runs the classic U.S. Navy circumference equations, which relate body fat to the logarithm of your girths rather than a simple ratio:
Men: body fat % = 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log10(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) − 450
Women: body fat % = 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip − neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) − 450
Girths are in centimeters. Fat mass = weight × body fat % ÷ 100; lean body mass = weight minus fat mass.
The waist (and hip, for women) term carries a far larger coefficient than the height term, so trunk girth dominates — a few centimeters at the waist move the result much more than the same change at the neck or in height.
Worked example 1 — a lean, fitness-level man
waist − neck = 46 → log10(46) = 1.6628, log10(175) = 2.2430.
Denominator ≈ 1.0324 − (0.19077 × 1.6628) + (0.15456 × 2.2430) ≈ 1.0619.
Body fat % = 495 ÷ 1.0619 − 450 ≈ 16.2% — "Fitness" band (14-17%).
Fat mass ≈ 78 × 0.162 ≈ 12.6 kg. Lean mass ≈ 65.4 kg.
Worked example 2 — a woman in the "average" range
waist + hip − neck = 137 → log10(137) = 2.1367, log10(162) = 2.2095.
Denominator ≈ 1.29579 − (0.35004 × 2.1367) + (0.221 × 2.2095) ≈ 1.0362.
Body fat % = 495 ÷ 1.0362 − 450 ≈ 27.7% — "Average" band (25-31%).
Fat mass ≈ 60 × 0.277 ≈ 16.6 kg. Lean mass ≈ 43.4 kg.
Worked example 3 — normal weight, higher body fat
BMI = 76 ÷ 1.80² ≈ 23.5 — inside the commonly cited 18.5-24.9 "normal weight" range.
waist − neck = 61 → log10(61) = 1.7853. Denominator ≈ 1.0324 − (0.19077 × 1.7853) + (0.15456 × 2.2553) ≈ 1.0404.
Body fat % = 495 ÷ 1.0404 − 450 ≈ 25.8% — already the "Obese" band by fat percentage.
Fat mass ≈ 19.6 kg, lean mass ≈ 56.4 kg. A larger waist relative to neck and height pushes fat percentage up long before a weight-based number reacts — the pattern people mean by "skinny fat."

Common measuring mistakes
- Pulling the tape tight enough to compress skin — this shrinks the girth and inflates how lean the result looks. It should sit snug, not dig in.
- Sucking in the stomach at the waist — measure standing relaxed after a normal exhale, not braced.
- Measuring the waist above the navel or up at the ribs instead of at the correct spot — a few centimeters here swings the result because the waist term is so heavily weighted.
- Comparing this number directly against a DEXA scan, skinfold calipers, or a smart scale's bioelectrical-impedance reading — every method carries its own bias, so track the trend within one method.
- Measuring once and trusting it — take each girth twice and average; tape angle, not the formula, is the biggest source of error.
What this calculator can't tell you
The Navy method estimates total body fat from trunk and neck girths; it can't see where that fat sits — visceral fat around the organs versus subcutaneous fat under the skin — even though location matters as much as the headline number for health risk. It also loses accuracy at the extremes: very lean athletes, bodybuilders, and people with very high body fat are better served by a DEXA scan, hydrostatic weighing, or a Bod Pod. Treat this tool as a fast, free, repeatable way to track your own trend, not a diagnostic or medical measurement, and not a substitute for guidance from a doctor, registered dietitian, or certified trainer.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the U.S. Navy tape method?
For most people, the U.S. Navy circumference method is accurate to about ±3-4% body fat compared with a DEXA or InBody scan — good enough to track progress over weeks. Accuracy depends on measuring at the same spots each time with a snug, level tape. It is less reliable at the extremes (very lean athletes or high body fat), where a lab method like DEXA is better.
Where exactly do I measure neck, waist and hip?
Stand relaxed and keep the tape horizontal and snug without compressing the skin. Neck: just below the larynx (Adam's apple), sloping slightly down toward the front. Waist: at the navel for men, at the narrowest point for women. Hip (women only): around the widest part of the buttocks. Measure on bare skin after a normal exhale, and repeat each measurement twice for consistency.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Using ACE categories: for men, essential fat is 2-5%, athletes 6-13%, fitness 14-17%, average 18-24%, and obese 25%+. For women, essential fat is 10-13%, athletes 14-20%, fitness 21-24%, average 25-31%, and obese 32%+. Women naturally carry more essential fat for hormonal and reproductive health, so the healthy ranges are higher than for men.
Can my BMI be normal but my body fat high?
Yes — this is often called "skinny fat". BMI only uses height and weight, so someone with little muscle and more fat can have a normal BMI while their body fat percentage is high. Because this calculator measures actual girths and reports fat mass and lean body mass separately, it catches cases that a BMI calculator misses.
