What basal metabolic rate actually measures

Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body spends doing nothing at all — no digestion, no walking, no thinking about anything in particular. It's the cost of keeping your heart beating, your lungs cycling air, your cells repairing themselves and your brain idling, measured under strict conditions: fully awake, lying still, in a thermally neutral room, at least 12 hours after your last meal. Clinicians and researchers use it as the fixed baseline underneath every other number in energy planning — it's the floor a diet should rarely go below, and it's the starting point this calculator multiplies by an activity factor to build your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). A closely related term, resting metabolic rate (RMR), is measured under looser conditions and usually comes out 5-10% higher than true BMR; most home estimates, including this one, are technically closer to RMR even though "BMR" is the term everyone recognizes.

Reading the inputs

  1. Sex — the two formulas below use a different constant for men and women because, on average, men carry more muscle mass at the same height and weight, and muscle is metabolically active tissue. This is the formula's only proxy for body composition.
  2. Age — both equations subtract a fixed amount per year. Metabolically active lean tissue is gradually replaced by fat with age even at a stable weight, so BMR falls even if the scale doesn't move.
  3. Height and weight — weight carries most of the calculation's weight (literally, via a coefficient near 10 kcal per kg), while height is a smaller correction for frame size. Enter your current, unrounded measurements — a 3 kg or 3 cm rounding error shifts the result by roughly 30 kcal.
  4. Activity level — this factor is applied only to convert your BMR into TDEE; it does not change the BMR figure itself, which reflects only what your body burns at rest regardless of how active the rest of your day is.

Harris-Benedict was derived in 1919 from a small study group and revised in 1984; Mifflin-St Jeor was published in 1990 from a larger, more representative sample and has since tested closer to measured metabolic rates in most validation studies, which is why this calculator uses it for the TDEE and calorie-target figures while still showing Harris-Benedict for reference.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Man, 30, 175 cm, 75 kg

Mifflin-St Jeor: (10 × 75) + (6.25 × 175) − (5 × 30) + 5 = 750 + 1093.75 − 150 + 5 = ≈1699 kcal. Harris-Benedict: 88.362 + (13.397 × 75) + (4.799 × 175) − (5.677 × 30) ≈ 1763 kcal. At a moderately active ×1.55 multiplier, TDEE ≈ 1699 × 1.55 ≈ 2633 kcal.

Example 2 — Woman, 45, 160 cm, 60 kg

Mifflin-St Jeor: (10 × 60) + (6.25 × 160) − (5 × 45) − 161 = 600 + 1000 − 225 − 161 = ≈1214 kcal. Harris-Benedict: 447.593 + (9.247 × 60) + (3.098 × 160) − (4.330 × 45) ≈ 1303 kcal — about 89 kcal higher, a typical gap between the two formulas at this body size.

Example 3 — Same body, 35 years apart

A 175 cm, 80 kg man at age 30 has a Mifflin-St Jeor BMR of ≈1749 kcal; at age 65, with identical height and weight, the age term alone drags it down to ≈1574 kcal — a 175 kcal drop from aging that has nothing to do with the scale. This is why "eating the same as always" quietly becomes a surplus over the decades.

A third widely used equation, the Katch-McArdle formula, replaces height and age entirely with your measured or estimated lean body mass, which makes it more accurate for very muscular or very lean individuals — but it requires a body-fat percentage this calculator doesn't collect, so it isn't included here. True BMR can only be measured directly with indirect calorimetry in a lab or clinic; every formula-based number, including both shown here, is a statistical estimate, not a diagnostic reading. Thyroid conditions, pregnancy, certain medications and significant recent weight change can all shift a person's real metabolic rate well outside what any formula predicts. Mifflin-St Jeor vs Harris-Benedict — which formula should I use?

Mifflin-St Jeor is the recommended default. Proposed in 1990 from modern body data, studies show it tracks measured resting metabolism more closely than the older Harris-Benedict equation (1919, revised 1984). This calculator shows both side by side and uses the Mifflin value for TDEE.

Why shouldn't I eat below my BMR?

Staying below your basal metabolic rate for long periods triggers metabolic adaptation — your body cuts its energy use — and increases muscle loss, which lowers your BMR further and makes rebound weight gain likely. Even when cutting, reduce only about 500 kcal from TDEE and avoid going under your BMR.

How can I raise my basal metabolic rate?

The most reliable way is building muscle. Muscle burns more energy at rest than fat, so strength training 2-3 times a week with enough protein gradually raises your BMR. Extreme dieting does the opposite — it lowers your metabolism.
